This is dynamic motivational speaker Simon Sinek’s advice. Yes, yes, he agrees, this is not conventional guidance and would most probably lead to disappointment – but at least it is better than aiming too low.
I resonate with Sinek’s plan for chasing your dream and would like to add to his inspirational pointers.
- Start by defining a clear vision, not only for yourself but also for the world you want to live in and make it happen. Remember, the word vision comes from the Latin verb to see. It should not be vague and be your constant source of motivation once you start chasing your dream.
- You should know your destination. Your goals must be visible, tangible and measurable and preferably be written down where you can see them daily.
- Be open to the unknown. Do not stick to safe and known places – be prepared to leave your comfort zone. That is the only way to grow.
- Take action – there is a time when thinking and planning should make way for positive, energetic action.
- The way to achieve your most ambitious goals is to break the daunting job down into bite-size chunks and manageable tasks. Start with small decisions and minor adjustments. If you plan to run a marathon, just start with the first hundred meters.
- Set unrealistic goals and do not be discouraged if you don’t reach the top.
- Don’t fear or failure. Treat each disappointment as an opportunity to learn how not to do it next time.
- Measure your momentum – you can go slower but don’t go back to zero and lose what you have gained.
- Maintain balance. Take note of the powerful feel-good hormone dopamine. Every time you achieve, the brain will reward you with this feeling, which could become addictive. Without balance you could burn out.
- Learn from creative people.
- If you have followers, turn them into leaders. Stop telling people what to do – ask them how to do the job and add to their sense of value. A leader makes sure that his followers have confidence and competence. Let people feel good about themselves.
- Be a giver. Ask yourself how can you help the human race become a supportive community and make your contribution.
