Self-esteem refers to your opinion about who you are and the worth you place on yourself. It is one of those difficult concepts to master in life. You don’t want to think too much of yourself because arrogance is not a nice trademark to have, but thinking too little of yourself can cause major problems for you too. What you should strive for is a healthy self-esteem. Balance is the key.
Let’s have a look at the things you should avoid in your quest for a healthy self-esteem:
Why would you want to be like someone else when you were created to be unique? You have a unique temperament and personality. Just be the best version of yourself you can be.
Sooner or later we all fall into this trap. It's one thing to acknowledge that you have made a mistake and to learn from that. It's another ball game if you run yourself into the ground because of that mistake. Talk to yourself in the same way you would talk to someone you have great respect and love for. Life is hard enough on everyone without you being hard on yourself too.
If I should ask you to write down a list of all the things you don’t like about yourself, you would probably find it very easy. What if I should ask you to write down a list of all the things you really like about yourself? Would it be as easy as the first list? It should be.
Stop focussing on all the negative things and start concentrating on the positive.
Have you noticed that we tend to remember a negative remark easier than a compliment? You probably can still remember how your maths teacher in Grade 8 told you that you are stupid, but what about all the teachers that complimented you? Can you remember any positive comments just as clearly?
Why would you only remember the negative things people say? Don’t put so much value in other people’s opinions about you. Focus on the compliments and weigh any negative comments first up against the truth before you take it to heart.
It’s so sad that there are so many people not developing their full potential and not reaching their life goals because they don’t believe in themselves. They are waiting for a parent, a teacher, a coach, a spouse or maybe a prophet or pastor to tell them that they are good enough and that they can do it. Don’t wait for someone else to see your potential! Belief in yourself. Know that you can do it. You don't require somebody else's blessing to fulfill your destiny!
