The word integrity has its roots in the Latin word integer, which means whole, uncorrupted, in its original perfect condition. In the old Oxford dictionary, the definition of integrity reads: The condition of having no part or element wanting; an unbroken or uncorrupted state.

It struck me that integrity has become a nice-to-have quality. We learn mantras like “fake it till you make it”- and this often works for us. Particularly in moments when you have to “keep your pose” or make sure that you make the right impression. But I cannot help but remember my philosophy professor’s words: “Strive to be integer, whole, in balance with yourself.”

Years ago, while moving house, standing on a ladder I lifted a heavy box, twisted and handed it to my helper. I put my back out and had to go for a series of physio treatments. The physiotherapist explained to me that, when one part of your body is out of joint, your muscular system causes distortion in an attempt to protect the damaged area. To prevent the pain, you start limping – often causing more harm to be fixed.

This is what happens when we lose our integrity – we become out of kilter. If ‘what you see is not what you get’ in your actions, words and personality, it will ultimately catch up with you. Those who don’t know you, might be impressed at first. Those who know you, will pick up that you were ‘faking it’. If you have a good relationship with them, they could be forgiving in the short term, but they will soon know that you are acting out of integrity.

Whatever you are, our professor taught us, be whole, be who you are and don’t pretend. Don’t try to be who you are not. Hitler, he said, was integer because he was entirely monstrous. If you are working at your image, caring more about what people think of you than being yourself, be careful that this image does not eventually take over who you are.

It is way easier to work at who you are, finding your own mission in life – and being truly integrated.
