You are the filing clerk

It is not easy to understand the intricate relationship between our thoughts and emotions. We know that thoughts trigger emotions and we know that emotional reactions often get us into hot water, but do we really know how to control these two vital ingredients of our daily lives?

All our thoughts have an emotional component. When we think, we also feel. Therefore, with every thought, there is always an emotion attached, which is stored in the unconscious mind. When the thoughts move to the surface, we feel the emotions of the thoughts.

I have recently come across an interesting approach to understanding this relationship. Attitude, the neuroscientists say, is the combination of thought and emotions. It is a state of mind that influences what you say and do.

Regardless of whether our attitudes are positive or negative, they have a profound impact on our minds and bodies. If the attitude is negative, the emotion will be a negative or stressful feeling. If the attitude is positive, the feeling will be peaceful. But here comes the tricky part – you cannot fake or hide this attitude.

When an attitude moves into the conscious mind, it produces a signal. The brain’s amazing hypothalamus, which responds to our emotions and our thoughts, alerts the rest of the brain to release chemicals to help with building new memory.

If you are anxious or worried, the hypothalamus will respond by releasing more chemicals than it should, resulting in chaotic and stressful thinking. If you change your attitude and reprogram yourself, the hypothalamus will cause the secretion of chemicals that cause a peaceful feeling. The rest of the brain will now secrete the correct neurotransmitters for clear thinking.

You cannot control your circumstances, but you can choose to keep toxic messages out of your brain. You are the filing clerk! While the incoming information has not yet lodged into your permanent memory, you can block it. You can choose to reject toxic thoughts and information, or you can file it in your mind and spirit – allowing it to become part of your subconscious mind and how you see yourself. Be your own good gatekeeper and do your filing wisely!
