Who are you and why are you here?

There are two burning questions most people struggle with in their lives. Why am I here? And What is the purpose of my life? I always say, before you can know the what and the why, you first must find the answer to the Who…

Who are you?

The answer to this question goes beyond your name, status, address or job title. It encompasses your temperament, character, values, personality and belief system.

You have been born with your temperament intact. Your character is the result of your natural temperament that has been shaped and disciplined by certain circumstances and factors, for example through education, teaching, faith, principles, motives and basic attitudes.

Personality is the outward manifestation of the inner self and it may correspond with character, depending on whether the person is genuine or not.

What you should know more about, is your natural temperament, because your inborn temperament affects your conduct on a subconscious level.

What colour is your temperament?

You are a unique blend of temperaments that you have inherited from your grandparents on your mother and father’s sides. I have defined these temperaments as colours. They are the Popular Yellows, the Powerful Reds, the Peaceful Greens and the Perfect Blues, with the first two being extroverts and the last two introverts.

Your main and secondary temperament colours define why you do things in a certain way. That will explain why a Perfect Blue would rather be at home studying, reading or playing on the computer, than attending a social gathering. They don’t like chit-chat. They love order, structure and routines.

The direct opposite of that would be the Popular Yellow, the extrovert of the extroverts. Almost always optimistic, in love with life, always searching for some new adventure and they will talk consistently should anyone give them half a chance.

The Powerful Reds on the other hand, might be extroverts too, but they are task-orientated. Driven to succeed, they will work themselves and anybody else into the ground for that ultimate success. They are born leaders. Just don’t start an argument with a Red, you will lose the fight, because they do believe they are always right, and they do love a good argument…

Opposite of the Powerful Reds are the Peaceful Greens. Oh boy, a true Green absolutely hates conflict of any kind or form. They are dreamers, thinkers who prefer peace and quiet. They care deeply about people and will move mountains if they are really passionate about something. If you must pick a song to serve as a motto for the Peaceful Greens, Hakuna Matata from the Lion King would probably be the best.

All these temperaments have their strengths and weaknesses. All of them are equally important. Life would have been chaotic if everybody had the same temperament. The various temperament blends bring balance to life.

If you can figure out, and I do have assessment tests available on my website, who you are, then you are more than halfway there to answering the big why and what questions of life.

Why are you here?

I don’t mean here on the website reading the blog, I mean why are you living now? Why were you born when you were born? Is it just a coincidence that you are alive in 2019?

Not at all! You must realize that you were created with a specific purpose. You are not a mistake. Neither are you just a faceless number in a world filled with technology. You were created to fulfil a specific role. Even before you were born, your Creator knew what your purpose will be. Some call it your calling. It’s that dream you either treasure or have buried deep inside your heart since your early childhood. Sometimes people forget about the dreams in their hearts. Sometimes adults smashed the dreams already in childhood. But I want to assure you today, that it is there.

There is no such thing as a man or a woman without a dream. We were all created to have dreams, we have a destiny and a reason for living. You add something to our world that nobody else can duplicate. There is a certain way you give love that nobody else can replicate. A certain way you give praise to your Creator that nobody else can imitate. A certain way you relate to people. A distinct sense of humour. A peculiar way of singing. A unique way of telling stories. A way of building a business.

How to find your dream/calling again

Become still, unpack your baggage from the past, clear your mind and your heart. Forgive yourself and others and start dreaming again. You will find your answers when you become still again. Still your mind. Focus on what your heart has been trying to tell you for so long. You know that it’s there. When you have found your dream again, you will know what your calling are.

Be prepared to fail and try again and again

Don’t expect everything to fall automatically in place when you have found your true calling. To reach your dream, to live the life that you have been born to live, you must be prepared to work hard, sacrifice, persist and face lots of changes, obstacles and challenges.

Bruce Wilkinson describes this journey so adequately in his book, The Dream Giver. He tells the story of Ordinary who lived in Familiar and one day discovered that he has a Big Dream to pursue. To fulfil the dream, he had to leave Familiar and venture into Unknown. He was very afraid and decided to turn back. “With every step back towards the middle of Familiar, Ordinary grew more comfortable. But he quickly noticed he was also growing sad again. And he knew why: With each step he took, he was leaving his Big Dream farther behind.”

Have the courage to follow your Big Dream no matter what. Remember, somewhere in the bigger picture of life, puzzle pieces are missing because you haven’t said yes to who you are and yes to your calling yet!
