Every year you make decisions to change yourself – this year, choose to BE yourself.

This is one of the multiple WhatsApp greetings that most resonated with my plans for the new year.

I gave up on making new year’s resolutions many years ago simply because I make them all year round. I believe in change, growth, and making a difference in lives – including my own. This means thinking, planning and walking through life open-eyed and with sharpened senses. I see a new year as a lucky packet with 365 brand-new opportunities – to be opened every day of the year.

However, the WhatsApp message made me realise there could be a danger in a quest for ongoing change. One could easily fall into the trap of never being happy with where you are. And, by implication, not being satisfied with WHO you are at the moment.

I remember a quote from my childhood, without recognising the author of the words: “Those who are quite satisfied sit still and do nothing. Those who are not quite satisfied are the sole benefactors of the world.”

This has been my justification for never sitting still for long, always looking for something to do, something to add – new ideas to challenge me.

So this will be my challenge for the new year: to BE myself and to encourage others to do the same because that is also a legitimate form of growth and a good investment in joy, peace and a balanced life.
