Do you lead with charisma or with character?

Words are often used together or as substitutes, while they have totally different meanings. In the corporate or political world, we often hear of a charismatic leader – confusing the quality of charisma with character.

Charisma is derived from a Greek word meaning “an ability to elicit favour in other people.” Charismatic, the adjective form of the noun charisma, refers to the magnetic and charming personal quality that draws people to someone. A person with charisma is thought to be able to easily influence others.

While character focuses on the inner qualities which make up an individual, charisma deals with the external magnetism or charm with which a person can inspire or influence others. The main difference becomes clear when one looks into the origin of the word character. It is derived from the Greek word for a chisel – the sharp steel tool used by a sculptor to strip away the unnecessary material to reveal the true work of art, hidden in the marble.

A charismatic leadership style relies on the charm and persuasiveness of the leader. These leaders, sometimes called transformational leaders, are driven by their convictions and commitment to their cause.

Although there is nothing wrong with charisma, it can become a counterfeit for character. A true leader needs character to sustain meaningful relationships and lead with integrity. Charisma can make people stand out for a period, but character can set them apart for a lifetime. It is the basis for authentic leadership and shows up the leader’s truth and personal values. It creates trust and sets a standard and work ethic for those who follow.

During tough times, the self-discipline of character keeps the true leader motivated and on track – something that charisma can never do.

One could argue that leaders need both charisma and character to influence their followers. However, if your focus is on charisma, it will not have the depth to sustain you.

Character is what is left when charisma has been chiseled away, showing truth and honesty, stamina and integrity.
