Anthony Robbins said: “You are the source of all your emotions. At any moment you can create or change them. You can decide to feel good right now, simply because you’re alive, simply because you want to.”
I found this quote at the bottom of a page in my diary. Out of sheer curiosity, I Googled Tony Robbins and resonated with the ideas of this international motivational speaker and business coach, who has had his share of suffering.
Tony believes that our lives are guided by the state we are in and the way we perceive the world around us. Never before was this truth more applicable than in our current situation.
It is pretty normal to put life on ice at the moment – postponing goals and dreams till “after lockdown”. Because, we reason, we don’t know when and how we will be free to move and earn a normal living. Our lives have been turned upside down and we are at the mercy of the Government and of an unseen microscopic virus without a vaccine.
This is probably at present the world view of a large portion of the population– settling for survival and “sitting out” the crisis until times and circumstances change.
But this is no recipe for success, says Tony Robbins and I fully agree. If anything, allowing yourself to become a victim of circumstance, is the surest way of giving your power away. I believe that each of us has the potential to rekindle our goals, to engage with the challenges of the moment and to find the skill set to move forward.
Ask yourself a few critical questions:
- How am I using the upside of the lockdown?
- If you belong to an essential services sector, do you resent your friends who can stay at home or are you grateful for the fact that you can still earn an income?
- If circumstance forces you to stay at home, are you investing in your own growth, upskilling for future?
- What am I taking for granted?
- What do I have to give others who have more stress than I have?
- What are my long-term targets for the days beyond lockdown? What can I do NOW that will allow me to hit the ground running when the gate opens?
- Which emotion is working against me at the moment – how can I change it, simply because I want to, simply because I am alive?
