Are you in a healing state?

Our bodies have an amazing natural ability to heal. We have all, at various stages since childhood, cut or hurt our physical bodies – and got over it. As long as a wound is kept clean, it will heal, even without our intervention. This miracle we mostly take for granted.

The same is true of our emotional body. Research has shown that emotional wounds from our past settle in our cells. We believe that we “get over” the hurt – but be all know that it catches up with us in our adult life. These hurts show up mostly in relationships and cause break-ups and pain, not only to ourselves, but also to our spouses and children who are totally unaware of our “unfinished business” from the past.

Behavioural scientists have discovered that these wounds can heal, provided the body is not in a stress state but in a healing state. If we get the support that we need, our body naturally comes into a healing state.

First, we have to understand the difference between a stress state and a healing state. In a stress state, our nervous system is aroused and prepared for fight, flight or freeze. The blood flow diverts away from the gastro-intestinal tract and the skin and the body’s normal housekeeping is neglected. That is why you turn pale, develop a stomach-ache and has your heart pumping out of your chest. Your energy is diverted to your muscles to enable you to fight or escape – hence the feeling of fatigue and problems with sleeping.

In a healing state, you are calm, your heart rate is normal and your body can rest and digest with ease.

Your mind is affecting your body in every moment. You can impact what is happening to your body by being aware of your thoughts and emotions, consciously getting yourself into a healing state.
