It’s easy to acknowledge that all people are fundamentally different from one another in theory… It’s a different ball game in practice when another individual step on your toes!

It’s not so easy to let go of arguments, to forgive and to acknowledge another’s right to freedom of speech if they do not agree with you.

Our human nature let us think that our way of doing things is the right way – that our way of feeling, thinking, and understanding of the world is the best way. When people differ from us, we relate these differences to madness or stupidity. We feel that if others were more like us, our lives and our relationships would be better.

However, trying to force people to be more like us always fails. Although people can change personality characteristics to a certain degree, their fundamental personality is largely unchangeable. We do injustice to others when we assume that such differences are inherent flaws that need to be changed. Furthermore, we are unable to understand and relate to these differences, causing conflict and misunderstanding in our relationships.

Trying to get someone to be a certain way that goes against their natural temperament is like trying to fit a spoon into a cup horizontally instead of inserting it vertically.

We need to understand that we are all different and we should stop trying to constantly change others. Not only that, you must respect others’ opinions, beliefs, and way of thinking.

Understanding that people are wired differently is a challenging task, but the reward is great. We can learn so much from each other if only we would let our guards down. Don’t be too proud to say, “I’m sorry, I don’t understand, but I will love to learn.” In the end, the great divide between us is just in our minds. All it takes is a change in perspective to realise that we are all human beings perfectly shaped to form the great puzzle called life.
