We live in a world where everything is done fast. Somewhere along the line, we started to think that more is better, faster is excellent and to be in a hurry is productive. If you think about it, it doesn’t make sense at all. Why are you rushing through life? Why do you have to have that new vehicle, that bigger house, that huge bank account? Are you sure that your hectic lifestyle is not hurting your relationships with your loved ones?
In our busy world we can lose track of ourselves and neglect our wellbeing without even realising it. Take some time and make sure that you pay attention to the following key areas in your life:
Regular and healthy eating
Have three meals and a couple of healthy snacks a day, with plenty of fruit, vegetables and wholegrain foods. Take it easy on the alcohol and caffeine and drink lots of water.
Regular exercise
Exercise is very beneficial for both your mental and physical health. Aim for at least three sessions of physical exercise, lasting 20–30 minutes each, per week.
Social contact
Get to know new people or reinvigorate your existing relationships. Sometimes relationships suffer as a result of stress and busy lifestyles – don’t let this happen to the important relationships in your life.
Reach out
Get involved with causes you feel are important, be that the environment, animal rights or taking care of children or the elderly. Do not underestimate the importance of small acts of kindness and excellence.
Learn more about the world
Studies have shown that 50% of people never read a book after they leave school. Own and collect written or audio books that broaden your mind and increase your knowledge.
Pursue your interests or hobbies
People are happier and healthier if they pursue interests and hobbies. It also works wonders for stress relief and as relaxation therapy. Try to structure your life to ensure that you have some time for personally meaningful pursuits. Check that the things you do in life reflect what you believe is important.
Remember, life isn’t a dress rehearsal. In the end relationships are more important than material things. It doesn’t help you have all the fame and fortune in the world, but you don’t have one true and loving friend by your side. Live your life at a pace where you can really appreciate the special moments. Slow down! Enjoy what you have NOW!
